Computer & IT Fundamentals Guide 💻

Before learning Windows Administration, you should understand how a computer works internally and how Windows communicates with hardware, storage, applications, and users.

1. What is a Computer?

A computer is an electronic device that accepts data, processes it, stores it, and produces useful information.

Basic working

Input -----> Processing -----> Output -----> Storage

Example

When you open Microsoft Word and type:

Hello World

  • Keyboard → Input
  • CPU → Processes the input
  • RAM → Temporarily holds the running program/data
  • SSD/HDD → Stores the Word file
  • Monitor → Displays the result

3. CPU / Processor

CPU = Central Processing Unit

The CPU is often called the brain of the computer because it executes instructions and performs calculations.

  • Performs calculations
  • Processes instructions 
  • Manages operations 
  • Communicates with RAM and other hardware

You open Chrome:

4. RAM

RAM = Random Access Memory

RAM is the computer's temporary working memory.

When applications are running, they use RAM.

Example

Suppose your computer has:

RAM = 8 GB

You open:

Chrome

VS Code

Microsoft Word

Docker

PowerShell

These programs consume RAM.

5. HDD

HDD = Hard Disk Drive

HDD uses magnetic spinning disks to store data.

Example:

1 TB HDD

can store:

Windows, Documents, Videos, Photos, Applications

Advantages

    • Generally cheaper per GB
    • Available in large capacities
    • Good for bulk storage

Disadvantages

  • Mechanical moving parts
  • Slower than SSD
  • Can be more sensitive to physical shock
  • Produces some noise

 

6. SSD

SSD = Solid State Drive

SSD stores data using flash memory and has no spinning mechanical disk.

Advantages

  • Much faster than traditional HDD
  • No moving mechanical parts
  • Faster Windows boot
  • Faster application loading
  • Generally quieter

HDD → Windows may take longer to boot

SSD → Windows usually boots much faster

7. Motherboard

The motherboard is the main circuit board of a computer.

It allows different hardware components to communicate.

Major components connected to motherboard

Think of it as:

The communication highway of the computer.

8. BIOS

BIOS = Basic Input/Output System

BIOS is firmware stored on the motherboard.

It starts running when the computer is powered on.

9. UEFI

UEFI = Unified Extensible Firmware Interface

UEFI is the modern replacement for traditional BIOS firmware.

10. Operating System

An Operating System (OS) is software that manages computer hardware and provides an environment for applications.

Examples:

11. What is Windows Administration?

Once you understand the fundamentals, you can move into Windows Administration.


A Windows Administrator manages systems such as:

12. 32-bit vs 64-bit

This refers to the architecture of the operating system and processor.

32-bit

Older architecture with more limitations on memory addressing.

64-bit

Modern architecture capable of handling much larger memory address spaces and modern software.

Most modern Windows computers use:

Important distinction

x64 generally means the 64-bit x86 architecture.

ARM64 is a different 64-bit processor architecture.

For Windows administration, knowing the architecture is important when installing:

13. Drivers

A driver is software that allows the operating system to communicate with a hardware device.

Example

You connect a printer:

Without the appropriate driver, Windows may not properly communicate with the hardware.

16. What is a File System?

A file system is the method an operating system uses to organize and manage data on a storage device.

It determines how Windows handles:

  • Files
  • Folders
  • Permissions
  • File names
  • Metadata
  • Storage allocation

Common file systems you should know for Windows administration are:

NTFS

FAT32

exFAT

ReFS

 

17. NTFS

NTFS = New Technology File System

NTFS is the primary general-purpose file system used by modern Windows installations.

Important features

    • File/folder permissions
    • Security features
    • Large files and volumes
    • Journaling
    • Compression
    • Encryption support
    • File ownership
    • ACLs (Access Control Lists)

Example

Windows system drive:

C:\

NTFS

Why administrators need NTFS

Suppose you have:

C:\CompanyData

You want:

Manager → Full Control

Employees → Read

Guest → No Access

NTFS permissions can be used to implement this type of access control.

 

18. FAT32

FAT32 = File Allocation Table 32

FAT32 is an older and highly compatible file system.

It can be useful for:

·       USB drives

·       Older devices

·       Compatibility situations

·       Some boot/recovery media

Major limitation

A single FAT32 file cannot exceed approximately 4 GiB.

So a file such as:

5 GB.iso

cannot be stored as one file on FAT32.

 

19. exFAT

exFAT = Extended File Allocation Table

exFAT was designed particularly for flash/removable storage and supports large files while maintaining broad compatibility.

Common use cases include:

  • ·      USB flash drives
  • ·       SD cards
  • ·       External storage
  • ·       Cross-platform file transfer

Example

You have a:

128 GB USB drive

and want to transfer a large video or ISO file.

exFAT may be a better choice than FAT32 when compatibility requirements allow it.

 

20. ReFS

ReFS = Resilient File System

ReFS is Microsoft's file system designed with resilience and data integrity in mind.

It is particularly relevant in certain Windows Server and specialized storage scenarios.

Important: ReFS is not simply a replacement for NTFS in every situation. NTFS remains the normal choice for many Windows system and general-purpose volumes.

You can inspect disks using Windows tools.

26. Real-World Troubleshooting Example

Problem:

"My Windows computer is very slow."

Don't immediately reinstall Windows.

Check layer by layer:

Is CPU usage very high?

By CMD- -  tasklist

Step 2 — RAM

Is the system running out of memory?

tasklist /fi "memusage gt 1024"    - to list all background processes using more than 1GB of RAM

systeminfo | find "Available Physical Memory"  - to see how much RAM is currently free.

Step 3 — Storage

Is the disk nearly full?

Step 4 — Applications

Is one application consuming excessive resources?

Step 5 — Drivers

Is there a problematic device driver?

Step 6 — Windows Services

Is a Windows service consuming resources?

Step 7 — Malware/Security

Is suspicious software running?

This is the IT troubleshooting mindset you should develop.
